The Damamūkanidāna-sūtra says: In Śrāvastī there was a great minister named Sudatta. His wealth was limitless, and he succoured the poor and destitute; hence he was titled 'Anāthapiṇḍada' (Provider of the Destitute). He had seven sons of extraordinary talent, and wished to betroth the youngest. He personally went to Rājagṛha, where he first heard the name of the Buddha, and his heart was filled with great joy. Later he saw the Buddha and attained the first fruit [of stream-entry]. He invited the Buddha to return to his grove, and first prepared a monastery. Together with Śāriputra, he purchased Prince Jeta's grove, covering eighty qing of ground entirely with gold. The prince provided the trees and the gate of the grove. At that time there were thirty million non-Buddhists who contested their arts with Śāriputra to dispute the purchase of the golden grove. A great assembly gathered, numbering one billion eight hundred million people. Śāriputra manifested supernatural powers and preached the Dharma, and each attained the traces of the path. Three million disciples of the six masters renounced household life and followed the path. Together with Sudatta they drew the ropes and laid the foundation. In the six heavens, [celestial palaces] appeared; and for the Buddha they miraculously produced a sandalwood chamber. There were one thousand two hundred separate living quarters, and ghanta bells were struck in one hundred and twenty separate places. When the monastery was completed, they reported to the king and invited the Buddha, coming together to receive the gift. Because the two men made it together, the monastery was given two names. The Saṃyuktāgama says: Sudatta fell gravely ill; the Buddha visited his illness. At the end he attained the third fruit [of non-returner] and was born in the Tuṣita Heaven. Because of his original vow he was born in heaven. Later he came to the Buddha's place and recited verses (not recorded here).
