The Qiuliyu jing says: The king's younger brother Shanrong entered the mountains and saw a brāhmaṇa ascetic practicing austerities seeking ṛṣihood, whose mind of desire was stirred so that he could not succeed. He further thought to himself, 'Can śramaṇas who delight in practice be free from desire?' When the king heard his brother's argument, he immediately increased his instruments of pleasure, but told him he would be executed in seven days. Because of mindfulness of death, he had no love or passion whatsoever. He spoke of impermanence and gave rise to deep faith and joy; he sought to renounce household life and immediately attained the four fruits. The Aśokāvadāna says: Because his brother did not delight in worldly life, the king sent spirits and deities within the city to build a mountain with streams ten zhang high, completely cutting off human contact. He donated his own clothing and wealth to make a stone image sixteen feet tall to venerate in the cave.
