The Sūtra of Cause and Effect states: "Before the Tathāgata Śākyamuni had attained Buddhahood, he was a great bodhisattva named Shan Hui (Sumati). His meritorious practices being complete, he ascended to the position of a [bodhisattva] destined to become a Buddha in the next life, and was born in Tuṣita Heaven with the name Sheng Shan. For the various celestial lords, he expounded the practices of a bodhisattva destined for Buddhahood in the next life, and also manifested bodies throughout the ten directions to preach the Dharma. When the predestined time was approaching, he was to descend and become a Buddha."
