(1) When the Prince was formerly in his fief, he perused the farewell letter and was choked with deep sorrow. Facing the *Commentary on the Vimalakīrti-sūtra*, he prayed, saying: “Formerly, when in the Master's presence, I dared not ask and resolve my doubts; now receiving your posthumous instructions, how might I understand them? If one can generate understanding by consulting the text, I pray you show a spiritual sign.” That night he had a dream: a gathering of monks assembled in a pavilion, where the Prince himself expounded the meaning and resolved difficulties like a flowing stream. He saw Zhizhe flying through the air, pouring out seven-jeweled coral inside the pavilion, and then flying away again. The Prince's later letter in reply to the posthumous instructions, together with the register of merits and the letter consoling the mountain community, are all found in a separate document. He sent a complete Tripiṭaka, two bronze bells, incense and banners in heaps, and rich clothing and articles; royal emissaries visited the temple year after year. Whenever the anniversary of his demise arrived, the commemorative feast was continuously maintained. Sima Wang Hong built the temple according to the plans; the mountain temple was magnificent, comparable to Śākya's palace. After the temple was founded, [the Prince] soon ascended to the Eastern Palace. Thus we know that the foundation of the Crown Prince's temple was verified by this auspicious sign. That the royal house constructed the temple was verified again. That the three kingdoms became one was verified again. That the temple was named Guoqing was verified again. These earnest, spiritual marvels came one after another in four verifications, which may serve as a model for ancient and modern times.
