1.14

說是偈已禮眾僧足。即昇法座而說是言。如是我聞。一時佛住波羅㮈鹿野苑中古仙住處。為五比丘初轉法輪。謂苦聖諦。如是廣說。說是語已。五百羅漢飛昇虛空。高聲唱言。奇哉無常甚大迅速。如河駛流逝而不返。我等昔者目覩世尊。今乃言聞。皆各悲泣而說偈言。

Having spoken this verse, he bowed to the feet of the Saṅgha, ascended the Dharma seat, and spoke these words: "Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling in the ancient hermits' abode in the Deer Park at Vārāṇasī, turning the wheel of the Dharma for the first time for the five monks, namely the noble truth of suffering..."—and so he expounded at length. When he had spoken these words, the five hundred arhats soared into empty space and proclaimed in a loud voice: "How astonishing! Impermanence is exceedingly swift, like a rapid river that rushes away and never returns. Formerly we beheld the World-Honored One with our own eyes, but now we only hear it said!" They all wept and spoke verses, saying:
