Shi Tanshi was a man from Guanzhong. From the time of his pravrajyā onward, he performed many miraculous deeds. At the end of the Da Yuan reign era of Emperor Xiaowu of the Jin, carrying several dozen collections of sūtras and vinaya, he went to Liaodong to propagate the teachings. Manifestly conferring the Three Vehicles and establishing them in the refuges and precepts, this was indeed the beginning of Gaogouli hearing the Path. In the early years of the Yixi reign era, he returned to Guanzhong to guide and instruct the Three Adjuncts. Shi's feet were whiter than his face; though he walked barefoot through mud and water, they were never stained with dirt, so everyone in the world called him the White-Footed Upādhyāya.
