Shi Baozhi was originally surnamed Zhu and was a native of Jincheng. In his youth he renounced the household and resided at Daolin Temple in the capital, serving the śramaṇa Sengjian as preceptor and practicing dhyāna. In the early years of the Taishi reign of the Song, he suddenly behaved eccentrically, having no fixed residence, eating at no regular times, his hair several inches long, always walking barefoot in streets and lanes, holding a khakkhara with scissors and a mirror hanging from its head, or hanging one or two bolts of silk. During the Jianyuan reign of the Qi, extraordinary signs gradually appeared. For several days he would not eat, yet showed no hunger in his face. In speaking with people, at first it seemed difficult to understand, but later all proved verified. At times he composed poems whose words were like prophetic omens. The gentry and commoners of the capital region all revered and served him together.
