Shi Zhidao, surnamed Ren, was a native of Henei. By nature he was gentle and prudent. He went forth from the household at the age of seventeen and stayed at Lingyao Temple. He ate vegetarian food and had few desires; apart from the six monastic requisites, he kept almost no extra possessions. His learning spanned the Tripiṭaka, and he was particularly well-versed in the Vinaya rules. He Shangzhi admired his virtue, paid him homage, and invited him to reside at Falun Temple, which He had constructed. Previously, when the northern Wei invaders destroyed the Buddhadharma and the later lineage revived it, the transmission of precepts was largely deficient. Since Dao had vowed to propagate the teachings and did not shrink from hardship, he led more than ten like-minded companions to Hulao. He gathered the monastics of the five provinces of Luo, Qin, Yong, Huai, and Yu, meeting at Yinshui Temple. Lecturing on the Vinaya and clarifying the precepts, he renewed the transmission of the ordinations. That the monastic prohibitions of the illegitimate state were preserved intact was due to Dao's efforts. Later he returned to the capital. When Wang Huan went out to govern Xiangzhou, he took Dao along. He died in Xiangzhou in the second year of Yongming at the age of seventy-three.
