Shi Faying, surnamed Suo, was a native of Dunhuang. He went forth from the household at the age of thirteen as a disciple of Faxiang, residing at Gongfu Temple in Liangzhou. Together with his fellow student Fali, he became renowned for the Vinayapiṭaka. After submitting himself to study, he never needed to ask twice, remembering everything upon a single hearing. He meticulously studied the Vinaya and broadly traversed the sūtras and treatises. At the end of the Yuanjia era, he went down to the capital and stayed at Xinting Temple. When Emperor Xiaowu moved south, he renovated this temple, and because Ying was enlightened in both learning and practice, the Emperor decreed him to be the saṃghapradhāna of the capital. Later he resigned from the post and returned to Duobao Temple. He constantly practiced meditation in quiet rooms and also occasionally opened seats for lecturing on the Vinaya. When Emperor Gao of Qi ascended the throne, he again decreed him to be the head of the monastic saṃgha, with provisions in all matters doubling the regular quota. With the offerings he had received over time, Ying produced scriptures and images as well as a medicinal repository, placing them at Changgan. He died in the fourth year of the Jianyuan era of Qi at the age of sixty-seven. He compiled the Prātimokṣa of the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya as well as Karmavācanā texts.
