Since the Great Teaching was transmitted east, all five schools have crossed over. At first Puṇyatāra recited the Sanskrit text of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, and Kumārajīva translated it into Jin Chinese, but before it was finished Puṇyatāra passed away. Later, Dharmaruci again recited the remainder, and Kumārajīva finished translating it completely. The Dharmaguptaka vinaya was translated by Buddhayaśas, which is the Sifen lü (Four-Part Vinaya). The Sanskrit texts of the Mahāsāṃghika and Mahīśāsaka schools were both obtained by Faxian. Buddhabhadra translated the Mohesengqi lü (Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya). Buddhajīva translated the Mahīśāsaka vinaya, which is the Wufen lü (Five-Part Vinaya). As for the Kāśyapīya school, some say its Sanskrit text has crossed over, but it has not yet been translated. The Samantapāsādikā (Shanxian), the Mātṛkā-śīla, the Nidāna, and the like, are also branches of the vinaya. Although all these schools have been transmitted, the single version of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya has flourished most in the eastern lands. Because formerly the Vinaya Master Vimalākṣa, who was originally a master from the western lands, entered the Guanzhong region and travelled to Jing and Shan, he expounded the Daśādhyāya-vinaya everywhere, as is amply seen in the Song Catalog. Tanyou received the oral teachings in person, and Sengye followed in his footsteps to propagate them. During this time, Qu, Yan, Yin, Rong, and others all took You and Ye as their models, being renowned figures in the Song dynasty. Yet they all interpreted based on the literal text, without deep probing. Later, Vinaya Master Zhicheng exhausted profound reflection. Whatever he unfolded and explained opened up new approaches and established further categories. Between the Qi and Liang dynasties, he was hailed as an epoch-making figure; his disciples' transmission records are still esteemed today.
