Zhi Tanlan was a native of Qingzhou. He ate vegetarian food, took delight in dhyāna, and recited three hundred thousand words of sūtras. During the Taiyuan reign of the Jin, he traveled to Shan, and later rested at Mount Chicheng in Shifeng; seeing a place where the woods and springs were clear and open, he settled there. After several days, he suddenly saw a man several tens of spans tall, who scolded Tanlan and told him to leave. He also saw various strange beasts and birds repeatedly trying to terrify Tanlan. Seeing that Tanlan remained calm and self-possessed, the man knelt on his knees, bowed, and said: "King Zhuqi is my maternal uncle; I am now going to Mount Weiqing to join him, and I yield this place to present it to you." Three years later, there was suddenly heard the rumbling of carriages and horses, and the mountain peak was covered with attendants. Soon, someone wearing a headcloth announced himself as King Zhuqi; after being announced, he advanced, accompanied by twenty-three family members including his wife and children, all of whom were graceful in appearance, surpassing those of the mortal world. When he arrived at Tanlan's place and exchanged greetings on the weather, Tanlan asked where he lived. He replied: "Mount Weiqing in Le'an County. Having long admired your reputation, I have now come with my family to take refuge with you and ask to receive the refuges and precepts." Tanlan immediately administered them. After receiving the Dharma, he made an offering of ten thousand cash and two vessels of honey, bid farewell, and departed. Thereupon, the sounding of reed pipes and blowing of horns were heard, their sound shaking the valleys. Tanlan's assembly of more than ten dhyāna meditators all heard and saw this together. He died on the mountain during the Yuanxi reign of the Jin at the age of eighty-three.
