Shi Faxu, whose secular surname was Hun, was a native of Gaochang. His virtuous conduct was pure and prudent; he ate vegetarian food and cultivated dhyāna. Later he entered Shu, practicing dhūta among the tombs of Master Liu, where tigers and wild cattle in the mountain valleys did him no harm. He recited the Lotus Sūtra, the Vimalakīrti, and the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra. He regularly stayed in a stone chamber, meditating and reciting at the same time. In the height of summer, he gave up his life inside the chamber, yet after seven days there was no foul odor. To the left side of his corpse there was fragrance, which ceased only after ten days; each night it emitted light that illuminated several miles around. The villagers then erected a tomb-stūpa over his corpse.
