His disciple Sengliang, surnamed Li, was a native of Chang'an and studied under Sengzhou. When the Prince of Yongchang first invited monks, none dared respond, all saying that since the Buddhadharma had only newly revived, they suspected unforeseen dangers. Liang said, "The transmission of the Semblance Dharma depends upon people, and that time is precisely today. If I am executed, I shall bear it myself; if I am spared, then the Way will have the chance to flourish once more." Moreover, Sengzhou urged him on, so he accompanied the envoy to Chang'an. Before he arrived, the prince and the populace swept and washed the streets and alleys, lining the houses to await and welcome him. The prince personally went out of his way, bowing to his feet to pay respects. Liang set forth admonitions on fortune and misfortune, and instructed him on cause and effect. His words were concise and his reasoning profound, gentle yet incisive. Those who heard him were filled with grief and joy, each unable to contain themselves. Thereupon the old monasteries were restored, and śramaṇas were invited. That the Great Dharma revived once more in the Guanzhong region was through Liang's efforts.
