Shi Facheng was a native of Liangzhou. He underwent pravrajyā at sixteen, and his studies encompassed both the sūtras and the vinaya. He did not partake of the five grains, subsisting only on pine resin, and lived in seclusion in rocky caves, taking the cultivation of dhyāna as his duty. During the Yuanjia reign era, Prince Huaisu of Donghai went out to govern Baxi; hearing of Facheng's reputation, he sent for him, and they met at Fucheng. In the summer retreat he lectured on the vinaya, and after concluding the matter, took leave and returned. He subsequently paused in Guanghan, where he again promoted the methods of dhyāna. Later, upon contracting a minor illness, he addressed the assembly, saying: 'I, Facheng, have constantly recited the Ratnakūṭa-sūtra.' Thereupon he made the effort to recite it himself; but having completed only half a scroll, his energy failed and he could not bear it. He then ordered someone to read it; as soon as it was finished once through, he joined his palms and passed away. More than ten attendants caring for him during his illness all saw in the sky a dark-blue horse bearing a golden coffin on its back, ascending into the void and disappearing.
