Shi Daofa, whose secular surname was Cao, was a native of Dunhuang. Leaving his family to enter the Way, he devoted himself single-mindedly to dhyāna practice, and also occasionally practiced divine dhāraṇīs. Later he traveled to Chengdu. When Wang Xiuzhi and Fei Kengzhi were in office, they invited him to be the abbot of the two temples of Xingle and Xiangji. He trained the assembly according to the rules, constantly practiced piṇḍapāta, and did not accept individual invitations or saṃgha meals. From what he obtained by begging food, he would constantly reduce his portion to give to insects and birds. Every evening he would strip off his clothes and sit exposed to feed mosquitoes and gnats, doing so for many years. Later, entering samādhi, he saw Maitreya emit a light from his navel, illuminating the karmic retributions of the three destinies. Thereupon he redoubled his diligence, constantly sitting and never lying down. In the second year of the Yuanhui reign era, he attained parinirvāṇa while in samādhi. Sitting upright on his rope-bed, his countenance was as serene and joyful as on ordinary days.
