Shi Fawu was a native of Qi. His family made its living by farming and sericulture, and he had six sons, all of whom grew to adulthood. When Fawu was fifty his wife died, and the whole family felt a profound longing for the Way; the father and his six sons, seven people in all, took pravrajyā together. Traveling south to Wuchang, he wandered among the mountains and waters, and seeing the southern slope of Mount Fan, he found it suitable for a secluded hermitage; it had originally been the dwelling of the hermit Guo Changxiang, and Fawu intended to end his days there. At that time, Ruan Hui of Chenliu, the grand administrator of Wuchang, heard of this and marveled at him; he therefore cleared paths, opened up the mountain, and built rooms and chambers for him. Fawu did not eat non-glutinous rice, constantly subsisting only on barley meal, taking just one meal a day. He recited the larger and smaller Prajñāpāramitā-sūtras and the Lotus Sūtra. He constantly practiced the Way during the six periods of the day, wandering as a dhūta through mountains and marshes without fleeing tigers or wild rhinoceroses. At times he sat in dhyāna under trees, sometimes not rising for days. He died in the mountains in the seventh year of the Yongming reign era of the Qi, at the age of seventy-nine.
