On the third day of the sixth month in the second year of Xiaojian of the Song dynasty, he gathered firewood to make a pyre, invited monks to hold a vegetarian feast, and took leave of the assembly. On that day, clouds and mist merged in darkness, and dense rain fell steadily. Sengyu then vowed, 'If my aspiration is to be fulfilled, heaven should become clear and bright; if there is no divine resonance, let torrential rain pour down, so that these fourfold assemblies may know that spiritual response is never unperceptive.' As soon as he finished speaking, the clouds parted and the sky cleared. At the end of the first watch of the night, he entered the pyre alcove, sat cross-legged with palms joined, and recited the 'Chapter on Bhaiṣajyarāja'. Even when the flames closed in, he kept his palms joined without slackening. Monastics and laypeople who knew of it rushed over, filling the mountain, and bowed with their heads to the ground in homage, wishing to establish a karmic connection. All saw a purple vapor soar into the sky, which ceased only after a long time. He was forty-four years of age at the time.
