Shi Faguang was a native of Longxi in Qinzhou. He had faith from his youth. Only at the age of twenty-nine did he take pravrajyā and engage in dhūta asceticism. He did not wear silk padding, renounced the five grains, and fed only on pine needles. Later he vowed to burn his body, whereupon he ingested pine resin and drank oil for half a year. On the twentieth day of the tenth month in the fifth year of the Yongming era of the Qi, within Jicheng Temple in Longxi, he gathered firewood and burned his body to fulfill his former vow. When the fire reached his eyes, the sound of his chanting was still clear. When it reached his nose, it became indistinct, and he abruptly ceased. He was forty-one years of age. At the end of the Yongming era, there was a monk named Facun in Shifeng County who also burned his body in offering. Commandery Governor Xiao Mian dispatched the śramaṇa Huishen to erect a stūpa for his ashes.
