Shi Tansui, whose origins are not known in detail, took pravrajyā when young and resided at Baima Temple in Heyin. Eating vegetarian food and wearing coarse cloth, he recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, usually once every day. He also thoroughly understood the sūtra's meaning and explained it to others. Once in the night, he suddenly heard a knock at the door, saying they wished to invite the Dharma master to preach the Dharma for ninety days. Tansui did not consent, but upon persistent requests, he went along. Yet he was still as if in sleep; by the time he awoke, he found himself in the shrine of the spirit of the Baima barrier together with one disciple. From then on, he secretly went there every day, without anyone else knowing. Later, monks of the temple passed in front of the shrine and saw two high seats, with Tansui in the north and his disciple in the south, as if there was the sound of preaching. They also smelled an extraordinary fragrant aroma. Thereupon religious and laypeople passed the word along, all calling it a divine anomaly. When the summer ended, the spirit presented an offering of one white horse, five white sheep, and ninety bolts of silk. After the praṇidhāna was concluded, they parted ways. It is not known where Tansui ended his days.
