Śramaṇa Daosong, surnamed Xia, was a native of Gaomi. He went forth from the household at the age of ten. In his youth he was profound, reserved, and possessed of resolve and capability. After receiving full ordination, he devoted himself to the study of the Vinaya. He recited three hundred thousand words of sūtras. In associating with superiors and inferiors, he never showed an expression of joy or anger. By nature he was fond of giving (dāna): whatever offerings he obtained, he gave them all to others. Apart from his water-vase and robes, he had virtually no extra possessions. During the Yuanhui era of the Song, he came to the capital and resided at Dinglin Temple on Mount Zhong. Guarding the quiet in a solitary chamber, his repentance and recitation were ceaseless. Whenever people visited him, he would expound the Dharma to instruct and encourage them, using this in place of food and drink. Those who followed him and requested the precepts were very numerous. Later he died in the mountains at the age of forty-nine.
