The Buddha's tooth relic was originally in the kingdom of Udyāna; from Udyāna it came to the Rouran, and from the Rouran it came to the land of Liang. Xian brought the tooth back to the capital for fifty-five years, secretly worshipping and serving it himself, with no one else knowing of it. Only when Prince Wenxuan had an evocative dream was it made known to both monastics and laity. Xian's vinaya practice was pure and meticulous, and his virtue served as a model for beings. Wang Su and Wang Rong of Langye, Zhang Rong and Zhang Juan of Wu, and the śramaṇas Huiling and Zhicang, among others, all prostrated themselves, touched his feet, and revered his admonitions and teachings. In the Yongming era, Xian was appointed monastic director by imperial decree together with Xuanchang of Changgan Temple, separately overseeing the northern and southern banks.
