Shi Faping, surnamed Kang, was a man of Kangju. He resided in Jianye. Together with his younger brother Fadeng, he left home and resided at Baima Temple. As disciples of Tanyue, they together transmitted their master's art. His resonant tone was pure and elegant, its modulations limitless. Later, the two brothers moved together to Jetavana Temple. The younger brother was rather plain in appearance, but his voice surpassed that of his elder brother. When the Song Senior General held a vegetarian feast at the Eastern Headquarters, he at first looked down on him because of his appearance. But upon hearing him open the scroll and sing three sections, he wrung his wrists in heartfelt submission and sighed, saying, 'In taking a man by his looks, I have misjudged Ziyu—how true this is!' Later, when the venerable Yan of Dong'an began giving a lecture, after Deng finished chanting three sections of the sūtra, Yan slowly waved his chowry and said, 'Reading the sūtra like this is in no way inferior to delivering a lecture.' With that, he dismissed the assembly. The next day he reopened the topic; commentators considered this to be the way of mutual fulfillment. Both brothers passed away at the end of the Yuanjia era.
