Śramaṇa Tanping, whose secular surname was Yang, was a native of Nan'an in Jianwei. In his youth he traveled to the capital to study scripture recitation, residing at Baima Temple. His intonation was very skillful, but he was excessively self-assured from dawn to dusk, so his contemporaries did not extol him. Thereupon he dedicated himself to the rules and standards and studied them with greater intensity; later he finally surpassed the crowd, and opinions of him completely transformed. When chanting the three Benqi sūtras, his vocal tone was particularly excellent. Later he returned to Shu and resided at Longyuan Temple. Those along the Ba and Han rivers who cherished chanting all revered his vocal model. Whenever he emitted a brahma-sound, birds and horses would cry out mournfully and travelers on the road would halt their steps. Thereupon he cast a bronze bell, making a vow that in future lives he might always possess the eight vocal qualities and four unhindered eloquence. The presence of bronze bells in the Shu region began with this. Later he died at his residence. At that time in Shu there was also the monk Daoguang, who was moderately skilled in scripture recitation.
