During the Ningkang era of the Jin, he arrived at the capital. Prior to this, Emperor Jianwen had erected a three-story stūpa at Changgan Temple; after the stūpa was completed, it emitted light every evening. Da climbed Yuecheng and looked over in contemplation; seeing an extraordinary color solely at the tip of this spire, he went to worship with the utmost sincerity morning and evening. At night, seeing light frequently emanate from beneath the spire, he informed others and excavated together with them. Digging down about a zhang, they obtained three stone slabs. Beneath the central slab was an iron casket; inside the casket was a silver casket; inside the silver casket was a gold casket; and inside the gold casket were three relics (śarīra). There were also a fingernail and a strand of hair; when extended, the hair was several feet long, and when coiled, it formed a spiral, dazzling with light. This was one of the eighty-four thousand stūpas erected by King Aśoka during the reign of King Jing of Zhou. Monks and laypeople having marveled at it, they erected another spire west of the old stūpa to enshrine the relics. In the sixteenth year of the Taiyuan era of the Jin, Emperor Xiaowu further enlarged it to three stories.
