Shi Tanying was a native of Kuaiji. He left household life young, was scrupulous in moral conduct, recited more than one hundred thousand words of sūtras, and stayed at the Changgan Temple. He was by nature reverent and frugal, taking skillful guidance as his foremost duty. Hence he devoted his mind to preaching and chanting, which was naturally unmatched. Whenever he was invited, he went whether the host was noble or base, treating rich and poor alike. Zhang Chang heard him and sighed with admiration: 'His eloquence flows smoothly, fully conveying profound truths.' Tanying once suffered from scabies, which could not be cured despite protracted treatment. In his room he constantly made offerings to an image of Avalokiteśvara, prostrating morning and evening and praying for the illness to be cured. On an unusual day, he suddenly saw a snake crawling from behind the image along the wall up to the roof. In an instant, a rat fell to the ground from the roof, drenched in saliva, appearing already dead. Tanying watched it and saw that it seemed still viable, so he took a bamboo [strip] and scraped away the saliva. Having also heard that rats swallowed by snakes can cure skin diseases, he scraped the saliva and applied it to the scabies. When it had been applied all over, the rat also revived. Within two nights, the sores completely disappeared. Only then did he realize that both the snake and the rat had been brought about by his prayers. Thereupon he diligently transformed and guided [others], and his resolve became even firmer. The Grand Preceptor and Prince of Jiangxia, [Liu] Yigong, appreciated and esteemed him above all others. He later died at his dwelling at the age of eighty-one.
