At that time there was the lay practitioner Zhu Shulan of Henan, originally a native of Tianzhu. His family had fled turmoil for generations and settled in Henan. In his youth, Lan was fond of hunting; later, after experiencing a temporary death, he fully beheld the retribution of karma. He thereupon reformed, exerted himself with devotion, deeply revered the True Dharma, broadly investigated various languages, and was skilled in both Sanskrit and Chinese. There was also the bhikṣu Mokṣala, a religious master of the Western Regions, who was erudite and well-versed in antiquity; he held the Sanskrit original in hand, and Shulan translated it into the Jin language, calling it the Fangguang bore. The original birch-bark manuscript is now in Yuzhang. In the second year of the Tai'an era, Zhi Xiaolong obtained it from Shulan, transcribed five copies at one time, and collated them into a definitive text. At the time there were no chapter titles; the old text was written on fourteen bolts of fine silk, and he ordered it transcribed into twenty fascicles.
