Yi once accompanied Dao'an at Tanxi Temple. Teng Han, the Jin grand administrator of Changsha, relinquished his residence in Jiangling to make it a temple. He asked Dao'an for a monk to serve as its leader. Dao'an said to Yi: "The scholar-officials and commoners of the Jing-Chu region are just beginning to seek a master; who else but you can accomplish their conversion?" Yi then took up his staff and went south to establish the temple buildings; this was Changsha Temple. Later, when the wandering bandit Hu Yueyi invaded and plundered the south of the Han River, the entire territory of Jiangling took refuge at Shangming, and Yi founded a temple there as well. Once the band of brigands was cleared away, he returned to Jiangling and restored Changsha Temple. Through his sincere prayers, he was eventually blessed with the response of a relic, which was placed in a golden flask upon the fasting seat. Yi then bowed with his head to the ground and made a vow, saying: "If this is truly a surviving trace of the Diamond One, may it emit light." When midnight came, a five-colored radiance gradually emerged from the flask and filled the entire hall with light. The whole congregation was amazed and sighed, and all attributed it to Yi's spiritual efficacy. At that time, even those with views like those of Pūraṇa [Kāśyapa] abandoned error and returned to truth.
