6.31

玄雖苟執先志，恥即外從，而覩遠辭旨，趑趄未決。有頃，玄篡位，即下書曰：「佛法宏大，所不能測，推奉主之情，故興其敬。今事既在己，宜盡謙光，諸道人勿復致禮也。」

Although Huan Xuan stubbornly held to his former intention and felt ashamed to yield outwardly, on seeing Huiyuan's arguments he hesitated and could not decide. Shortly thereafter, Huan Xuan usurped the throne and immediately issued a decree, saying: "The Buddhadharma is vast and unfathomable. Out of the feeling of honoring the sovereign, reverence was formerly demanded. Now that the affair rests with myself, I should practice humility; the various men of the Way need no longer pay homage."
