Xie Lingyun of Chen commandery was proud of his talent and contemptuous of worldly customs, holding few people in esteem; but once he met Huiyuan, he submitted with solemn reverence in his heart. Huiyuan was thoroughly versed in Buddhist principles within, and skilled in the various secular books without; among the disciples, none failed to model themselves after him. At that time, Huiyuan lectured on the *Scripture on Mourning Garments*, and Lei Cizong, Zong Bing, and others all held their scrolls and received his instructions. Later, Cizong separately composed a commentary and titled the beginning "By Mr. Lei". Zong Bing thereupon sent him a letter teasing him, saying: "Formerly I received this meaning face-to-face with you before Master Shi; do you now inscribe the head of the scroll as 'Mr. Lei'?" His transforming influence over both the religious and the secular was of this kind in more than one instance.
