Shi Huijing, whose surname was Wang, was a native of Dong'e. In his youth he traveled to study between the Yi and Luo rivers, and later passed through Xu and Yan. His complexion was very dark, but his understanding and awakening were clear and far-reaching. At that time in Luoyang there was the śramaṇa Daojing, who was also exceptionally learned in his generation and was equally famous with [Hui]jing, but his ears were very long and large; hence the people of the time said: 'He of the great, long ears in Luoyang, he who is as black as ink in Dong'e: whatever is asked, neither fails to answer; whatever is answered, neither fails to resolve.' [Hui]jing's innate nature was open and unimpeded, clear, discerning, and powerful in contemplation; each time he turned the wheel of the Dharma, a thousand people carrying book-wrappers would arrive, and students from all over the realm never failed to assemble. He chanted the Lotus Sūtra and the Small Prajñāpāramitā, commented on the Vimalakīrti and the Viśeṣacintī-sūtra, and composed the Niepan lüeji (Brief Record of the Nirvāṇa), Dapin zhigui (Purport of the Large Prajñāpāramitā), Daxing lun (Discourse on Penetrating Destiny), as well as elegies for various Dharma masters. Most of these circulated in the northern lands and did not cross the Yangtze much. He died during the Yuanjia era of the Song, over sixty years of age.
