Shi Fanmin, whose secular surname was Li, was a native of Hedong. In his youth, he traveled and studied in Guanlong, and in his adulthood, he journeyed through the Peng and Si river basins; he mastered the depths of both Buddhist and non-Buddhist scriptures. Later, he rested in Danyang, frequently delivering lectures. Xie Zhuang, Zhang Yong, Liu Qiu, and Lü Daohui all took delight in his character and deeply admired him. He often expounded the Lotus Sūtra and the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, and also wrote a preface for the Summary of Essential Meanings in a Hundred Categories to delineate the key principles; thus the text was only one fascicle long, but its phrasing was concise and clear, and it was held in high esteem at the time. He later died in Danyang at over seventy years of age.
