Shi Chaojin was originally of the Zhuanxu clan and a native of Chang'an. Earnest in aim and diligent in practice, he was devoted to study from an early age, compiling and surveying both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna scriptures alike. His natural disposition was harmonious and quick, and his adherence to the precepts was strict and pure; thus before he reached thirty, his renown resonated throughout Guanzhong. When the western barbarian Bobo Helian raided and took Chang'an, causing panic among the people and the abandonment of Dharma services, Chaojin fled south and east to seek refuge, staying in the capital. There he further probed texts and purports, lucidly lecturing and expounding them. Shortly thereafter, he went to Gusu, where he again propagated the Buddhadharma. At that time Meng Yi of Pingchang, who was governor of Kuaiji, had long heard of his fine manner and teachings; he sent an emissary to welcome him and accommodated him at Lingjia Temple in Shanyin. Thereupon he stayed in Zhedong, lecturing and debating continuously. Monks and nuns of city and countryside, as well as laymen and laywomen of pure faith, all formed karmic ties of the bodhisattva and took his precepts and models to heart.
