Shi Huitong, surnamed Liu, was a native of Peiguo. In his youth his spirit was clear and vibrant, his lofty nature aspiring to the subtle and profound; he resided at Zhicheng Temple. Whenever he gave a flick of his fly whisk, carriages with canopies would fill the streets. Xu Zhanzhi of Donghai and Yuan Can of Chen commandery respected him with the rites of master and friend. Emperor Xiaowu generously added to his ranks and titles, decreeing that he be a companion to the two princes of Hailing and Lesser Jianping. Yuan Can wrote the *Discourse on Qu and Yan* to show Huitong; Huitong raised counter-refutations back and forth and published a text in the world. He also composed doctrinal commentaries on the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, Śrīmālādevī, Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya, and Abhidharma, as well as the *Refutation of the Discourse on the Barbarian and the Chinese*, the *Discourse on Manifest Proof*, the *Discourse on the Dharma-nature*, and the *Records of the Trigrams and Signs*, all of which circulated in the world. He died during the Shengming era of Song, at the age of sixty-three.
