8.53

先是北土法師曇准，聞宗特善《涅槃》，迺南遊觀聽。既南北情異，思不相參。准乃別更講說，多為北士所師。准後居湘宮寺，與同寺法身、法真並為當時匠者。

Prior to this, Dharma Master Tanzhun of the northern lands, hearing that Sengzong was exceptionally skilled in the Nirvāṇa-sūtra, travelled south to observe and listen. Because the sensibilities of North and South differed, their thoughts did not accord with each other. Tanzhun thereupon lectured separately, becoming a teacher mostly to northern scholars. Later, Tanzhun dwelt at Xianggong Temple, where he, together with Fashen and Fazhen of the same temple, were masters of their day.
