虎尚書張離、張良家富事佛，各起大塔。澄謂曰：「事佛在於清靖無欲，慈矜為心。檀越雖儀奉大法，而貪悋未已，遊獵無度，積聚不窮，方受現世之罪，何福報之可悕耶？」離等後並被戮滅。

Hu's Ministers of the Secretariat, Zhang Li and Zhang Liang, were wealthy families who served the Buddha; each erected a large stūpa. Deng said to them: "Serving the Buddha lies in purity and freedom from desire, taking compassion and pity as one's heart. Although you dānapatis formally uphold the great Dharma, your greed and stinginess have not ceased; you hunt without limit, and amass wealth endlessly. You are just about to suffer retribution in this present life—what blessed fruit can you hope for?" Li and the other were both later executed and their houses destroyed.
