Qiandule was originally a man of the Western Regions who had come to Luoyang for many years. Although the assembly respected his conduct and bearing, in the end none could fathom him. Later he said to the community of monks: "Southeast of Luoyang is Mount Panchi, where there is an ancient temple site whose foundations still remain; we may rebuild it together." The assembly did not believe him, but went along to inspect it. Entering the mountain, they arrived at a spot that was flat on all four sides. Qiandule pointed and said: "This is the monastery's foundation." They dug it up at once and indeed uncovered the stone foundation beneath the temple. Later he pointed out the sites of the lecture hall and the monks' quarters, and every word proved true. The assembly was amazed and sighed in admiration; thereupon they rebuilt it together, making Qiandule the abbot of the temple.
