Zhi frequently went back and forth between the Xinghuang and Jingming temples. When the present Emperor arose to power, he treated him with great reverence and courtesy. Previously, during the Qi, Zhi's movements had often been restricted; when the present Emperor ascended the throne, he issued an edict: 'Master Zhi's traces are tied to dust and defilement, but his spirit roams in dark stillness; water and fire cannot scorch or drench him, snakes and tigers cannot harm or frighten him. In terms of Buddhist principles, he is above the śrāvakas; in terms of recluses, he is among the loftiest of hidden immortals. How could worldly men bind and constrain him with ordinary passions and notions? How base and narrow it was to reach such extremes! From now on, as he pursues the Way, he may come and go as he pleases; he must not be restricted again.' From then on, Zhi frequently went in and out of the imperial palace.
