Shi Sengye, surnamed Wang, was a native of Henei. From youth he was intelligent and perceptive, and widely traversed the various canonical works. Later he traveled to Chang'an and studied under the venerable Kumārajīva. Seeing the newly translated Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya, he dedicated his efforts exclusively to this text. His brilliance was natural, and he penetrated its depths thoroughly. Kumārajīva praised him, saying, 'He is an Upāli of later generations.'
