Śramaṇa Huiyu was a native of Huanglong. He came to visit the capital and resided at Linggen Temple. In his youth he applied himself to learning, calling on teachers everywhere. He was skilled in discussion and had a refined demeanor. Whenever he heard others praising or criticizing people, he would stop up his ears and refuse to listen, or at times interrupt and halt it with different speech. His water-vase and robes were plain and simple, and he concluded [his meals] each day with a single noon repast. Through his diligent striving he set a standard of conduct, making the relief of suffering his primary duty. He recited the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, the Lotus Sūtra, and the Daśabhūmika-sūtra. He also practiced dhyāna, excelling in the five portals. He once saw in his sleep three men come and knock at his door, all with clean and neat clothing and caps, holding aloft parasols. Yu asked, "Whom do you seek?" They replied, "The Dharma Master is due to die; therefore we have come to welcome you." Yu said, "A few minor matters are not yet finished; can it be extended for one year?" They replied, "That may be done." When the next year completed one full cycle, he died. This was the seventh year of the Yongming era of the Qi, and his age was fifty-seven.
