Śramaṇa Huimi, surnamed Yang, was a native of Huayin in Hongnong, and a descendant of the Han Grand Commandant Yang Zhen. At the age of sixteen, he went forth from the household. After receiving full ordination, his resolve was to cultivate seclusion; he then entered the Zhongnan Mountains in Chang'an. The crags and valleys were precipitous and inaccessible, untrodden by human tracks. Mi, carrying his tin staff, ventured forth alone, unmolested by fierce tigers and majestic rhinoceroses. In his youth he recited the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra and also diligently cultivated samādhi. Thereupon he cut reeds to build a hut to serve as an abode to rest his spirit. When the time arrived, he would hold his bowl and enter the village; when his meal was done, he returned to his room for dhyāna and recitation. He did this for eight years.
