Śramaṇa Daolin was originally a native of Shanyin in Kuaiji. He went forth from the household in his youth and possessed disciplined conduct. Skilled in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra and the Lotus Sūtra, he recited the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra; Zhang Xu of the state of Wu revered and served him. Later he resided at Quanlin Temple in Fuyang County. The temple had often been haunted by ghosts and monsters, but from the time Lin resided there, they vanished. Lin's disciple Huishao was crushed by a building so that his head sank into his shoulders; Lin prayed on his behalf. At night Shao saw two foreign monks pull out his head, and when he arose at dawn, he was completely restored to normal. Thereupon Lin hosted an offering for the holy saṃgha and spread a new silk cloth on the couch. When the meal was finished, human footprints were seen on the silk, all over three feet long; the community was entirely convinced of his miraculous responsiveness. From this, the people of Fuyang began in every household to set up seats for the holy saṃgha to feed them. By the beginning of the Liang, Lin went out to reside at Qihe Temple. In the eighteenth year of the Tianjian era, he died at the age of seventy-three.
