Śramaṇa Huida, surnamed Liu, was originally named Sahe, a native of Lishi in Xihe of Bingzhou. In his youth he was fond of hunting. At the age of thirty-one, he suddenly seemed to die briefly, reviving after a day had passed. Having seen all the painful retributions of the narakas, he encountered a monk who said he was his teacher from a past life. The monk expounded the Dharma to instruct and admonish him, bidding him to go forth from the household and proceed to Danyang, Kuaiji, and Wujun to seek out the stūpas and images of King Aśoka, to worship them, repent of his errors, and atone for his prior transgressions. After awakening, he forthwith went forth to study the Way, changing his name to Huida. Diligently cultivating meritorious deeds, he made rites of repentance his sole priority.
