Later, he entered samādhi and did not eat for three days. Suddenly he said to his disciples, "You have lost your rice hamper!" Shortly afterward he took to his bed with illness. At that time, a fire broke out beside the temple. The temple was downwind, and the smoke and flames were certain to reach it. His disciples wanted to carry Fayuan out of the temple on a stretcher, but Fayuan said, "If the Buddha is burned, what use is there in my living?" He immediately took refuge with bitter devotion. Thereupon three sides were burned away, yet only the temple was not reduced to ashes. In the second year of the Yongyuan reign-era of the Qi, he died at the age of eighty-seven.
