Earlier, when Kumārajīva was in Kucha, he received the Vinaya from the Vinaya master Vimalākṣa. Later, Vimalākṣa entered the passes. When Kumārajīva heard of his arrival, he was overjoyed and paid his teacher respect with full etiquette. Vimalākṣa did not yet know of the coercion Kumārajīva had suffered, and so asked him: 'You have found great affinities in the Han land; about how many disciples have received the Dharma from you?' Kumārajīva replied: 'In the Han territory, the scriptures and Vinaya were not yet complete; the new scriptures and various treatises have mostly been translated and issued by me. Three thousand followers have all received the Dharma from me, but my accumulated karmic hindrances are deep, so I do not have them receive the teacher’s precepts.' Furthermore, when the monk Beidu was in Pengcheng and heard that Kumārajīva was in Chang'an, he sighed and said: 'I have playfully parted from this child for over three hundred years; the distance is vast without any appointed meeting, and I can only hope to encounter him in a future life.'
