Vimalākṣa, translated here as 'Flawless Eye' (Wugouyan), was a man of Kashmir. He was calm and quiet, with resolve and strength; he left home to tread the Path, fulfilling his tasks through ascetic discipline. Earlier, while in Kucha, he propagated the Vinayapiṭaka; scholars from the four quarters vied to go and take him as their master, and Kumārajīva was also among them at that time. When Kucha fell, he took refuge elsewhere. Shortly after, hearing that Kumārajīva was greatly propagating the sūtrapiṭaka in Chang'an, and wishing also to have the supreme division of the Vinaya reach the eastern land once again, he took his tin staff across the shifting sands, braved danger, and entered the east. In the eighth year of the Hongshi era of the illegitimate Qin, he arrived from within the passes. Kumārajīva treated him with the respect due to a teacher, and Vimalākṣa was also joyful to meet him from afar. When Kumārajīva passed away, Vimalākṣa traveled east of the passes, pausing in Shouchun and residing at the Shijian Temple. The Vinaya assembly gathered like clouds, and he vigorously expounded the Vinaya. The translation of the Daśabhāṇavāra by Kumārajīva consisted of fifty-eight fascicles; its final bhāṇavāra, which clarified the methods of receiving the precepts and various matters that accomplish wholesome dharmas, was named the 'Wholesome Recitation' (Shansong) according to its essential meaning. Vimalākṣa later took it to Shijian, expanding it into sixty-one fascicles, and changed the final bhāṇavāra to the 'Vinaya Recitation' (Binisong); therefore, both names still survive.
