Since Zhiyan's entreaty was deeply earnest, Bhadra pitied him and assented. Thereupon he took leave of the community and bade farewell to his master, packed provisions, and departed eastward. Travelling on foot for three years, through cold and heat, having crossed the Pamir Mountains (Congling), he passed through six kingdoms. The kings of these kingdoms, respecting his distant mission of conversion, devotedly offered him supplies. Reaching Jiaozhi, he boarded a ship and sailed along the coast. Passing beneath an island, Bhadra pointed to a mountain with his finger and said: “We should stop here.” The ship's master said: “Travellers value every day, and favourable winds are hard to come by; we cannot stop.” Having travelled over two hundred li, the wind suddenly shifted and blew the ship back beneath the island. Only then did the crowd realise his spiritual powers, and they all served him as their master, obeying his commands on when to proceed or halt. Later they met a favourable wind, and all the companion vessels set sail. Bhadra said: “We must not move.” The shipmaster therefore halted; soon after, those who had departed first were all capsized and wrecked. Later, in the dark of night, he suddenly ordered all the ships to set sail together. None were willing to follow him. Bhadra personally arose, pulled in the cables, and his ship set sail alone. Shortly after, pirates arrived, and all those who had stayed behind were pillaged and harmed.
