Before this, the śramaṇa Zhi Faling had obtained the earlier portion of the Avataṃsaka in thirty-six thousand gāthās in Khotan, but it had not yet been translated. In the fourteenth year of Yixi, Meng Yi, Administrator of Wujun, and Chu Shudu, General of the Right Guard, invited [Buddhabhadra] to serve as the master translator. Holding the Sanskrit text in his hands, together with more than one hundred monks including the śramaṇas Faye and Huiyan, he translated it at Daochang Temple. They determined the purport of the text, harmonized the Chinese and foreign languages, and marvelously captured the meaning of the sūtra; thus Daochang Temple still has an Avataṃsaka Hall. Furthermore, for the Sanskrit text of the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya obtained by the śramaṇa Faxian in the Western Regions, he again invited [Buddhabhadra] to translate it into the Jin language, the details of which are recorded in Faxian's biography. The texts he translated earlier and later include the Guanfo sanmei hai in six fascicles, the Niyuan, and the Xiuxing fangbian lun, totaling fifteen works in one hundred and seventeen fascicles. All of them investigated the profound purport and fully exhausted the subtle meaning of the text. [Buddhabhadra] died in the sixth year of Yuanjia, at the age of seventy-one.
