In the second year of Mengxun's illegitimate Chengxuan era, Mengxun crossed the river to attack Qifu Mumo at Baohan, appointing his heir Xingguo as the vanguard. He was defeated by Mumo's army, and Xingguo was captured. Later, the Qifu lost their defense, and Mumo and Xingguo were both captured by Helian Ding; Ding was later defeated by the Tuyuhun, and Xingguo was ultimately killed by mutinous soldiers. Mengxun was furious, and deeming that serving the Buddha brought no response, he immediately banished the śramaṇas, ordering all those aged fifty and below to return to lay life. Mengxun had previously made a sixteen-foot stone image for his mother; the image thereupon shed tears and wept. Dharmakṣema also offered remonstrance with standard moral maxims, and Mengxun then changed his mind and repented.
