Mengxun had a paternal cousin, the Marquis of Anyang, Juqu Anyang. By nature resolute and open-minded, he had dipped into books and records. Because Dharmakṣema entered Hexi and propagated the Buddhadharma, Anyang turned his attention to the inner scriptures, upheld the five precepts, and was able to recite aloud whatever sūtras he read. He always considered devotion to learning and broad listening to be the magnificent work of a Great Being. In his youth, seeking the Dharma, he crossed the shifting sands and reached Khotan, where at the great Gomati Monastery he met the Indian Dharma Master Buddhasena and inquired about the principles of the Way. Sena originally studied the Mahāyāna, possessed outstanding natural talent, recited half a hundred million verses, and clearly understood dhyāna methods; hence the various western countries called him the "Lion Among Men." Anyang received the Chan miyao zhibing jing from him, and relying on its Sanskrit text, recited it fluently from memory. Soon afterward he returned east toward his home town, and in Gaochang obtained one fascicle each of the two contemplation sūtras, Guanyin and Mile. When he returned to Hexi, he immediately translated the Chan yao, rendering it into the Jin language. When the illegitimate Wei annexed Western Liang, he fled south to the Song. Concealing his ambitions and humbling himself, he did not mingle with the secular world, but constantly visited stupas and temples, ending his days as an upāsaka.
