Shi Tanwujie, here translated as Fayong, had the surname Li and was a native of Huanglong in Youzhou. When he was young as a novice, he practiced austerities, maintained the precepts, and chanted the sūtras, being held in high regard by his master and the saṃgha. Having heard that Faxian and others had personally trodden the Buddha-lands, he sighed with emotion and made a vow to disregard his own life. Thus, in the first year of the Yongchu era of the Song, he gathered together twenty-five like-minded śramaṇas such as Sengmeng and Tanlang, and together bearing banners, canopies, and offering paraphernalia, they set out from the northern lands and traveled far to the west.
